How Far Is Petra from Amman?
Petra is located approximately 240 kilometres south of Amman, via the Desert Highway (Route 15). The drive typically takes between 2.5 and 3 hours each way, depending on traffic and road conditions. The road is well-maintained and clearly signposted throughout.
Most travellers depart Amman early — around 7:00 to 8:00 AM — to maximise time at the site, which typically requires a minimum of 5 to 6 hours to explore the main trail comfortably.
What to Expect on the Journey
The drive south takes you through the Jordan desert plateau, passing the city of Ma'an before descending into the Wadi Musa valley — the town that serves as the gateway to Petra. The landscape shifts from flat desert to dramatic rocky hills as you approach.

Best Time to Visit Petra
Season
March to May and September to November are the most pleasant months — cooler temperatures, clear skies, and manageable crowds. Summer (June to August) can reach 35°C inside the canyon, so early morning entry is essential. Winter (December to February) is cold but quiet.

Arriving by 8:30 AM when the site opens means walking the Siq in relative quiet before the main crowds arrive from tour buses, typically starting around 9:30 AM onward.
